MySpace locks you in!

In response to a minor hack that allows a Flash widget to redirect the user away from MySpace to another website, MySpace is encouraging users to upgrade to Flash 9 where they can specifically disable such redirects. IMHO, this is a good idea on behalf of MySpace. They are plugging in Flash and retaining users.

This will have a major affect on the widget market. Currenlty, widget makers like YouTube live off of the MySpace users by allowing them to post YouTube viewers on their MySpace blogs. They do this because readers will click on the YouTube viewer, which directs the user to the YouTube website. With that direct disabled, the value to YouTube is drastically reduced. YouTube will now have to rely on users posting backlinks outside of the Flash viewer.
